Yo-kai Watch Toys Review 2016
Yo-kai Watch was originally released as a series of role-playing video games in Japan back in 2013 and is based off a popular Japanese Yōkai or Youkai legend about supernatural beings.
In late 2015, Nintendo released the Yo-kai Watch toys and original video game in North America to reach an entirely new market.
Yo-kai Watch has gained immense popularity and the phenomenon has been confirmed to soon spread to more than 100 countries in Europe and Africa.
More than just a video game, it has become a mixed-media franchise complete with manga adaptations, an anime television series, animated films, and of course, toys.
In the story, you will need a Yo-kai watch to see all the hidden Yo-kai in the world. Once you befriend a Yo-kai, you are given a medal that you can use to summon that particular Yo-kai any time you need help. Given this, fans of Yo-Kai Watch will definitely love the toys that have been adapted for it:
Yo-kai Watch Season 1 Watch
The Yo-kai Watch Season 1 Watch is the first of the Yo-kai Watch toys to buy for an avid fan. It measures 3 x 6.5 x 11 inches and weighs only 7.8 ounces, so you can really wear it as a watch and collect medals separately.
When you buy this toy, it comes with 2 exclusive medals, but the watch itself can recognize more than 100 Yo-Kai medals. This is why it’s the essential toy to buy if you want to immerse in the world of Yo-Kai and summon your favorites.
As a toy, this watch is pretty neat because as you insert each medal into the watch, you will hear the Yo-kai’s name, tribe song, and other relevant sounds. 3 x 1.5v A76 alkaline batteries are also already included with your purchase.
The user impression on this watch is that it’s a great collector’s item and it really stays true to the series. You really feel like a Yo-kai is gonna pop out for real once you place the medal in the watch. So it’s really loved by Yo-Kai Watch fans of all ages.
However, it’s a bit clunky as a watch especially for smaller wrists. So while it’s great as a toy, users have commented that it’s not something you would want to wear every day.
Another thing that stuck to the mind of some users is that the sounds can be a bit loud and you might want to dampen the noise a bit. However, it also adds to the effect of being an authentic Yo-kai watch.
Yo-kai Watch Medals
The Yo-kai watch can read over 100 Yo-Kai Watch medals, you get 2 to start off with when you buy the watch. More medals are available to buy separately.
You can scan each medal into a Yo-kai Watch Land App and discover the crazy wonderful world of Yo-Kai.
The medals are released in what are called medal mystery bags, also sometimes referred to as blind bags. They are called this because you can’t know what medals are inside until you open it.
This means that you may get a few duplicates as you build up your collection. Certain Yokai medals are also rarer than others. This makes collecting Yo-Kai great for collectors because of the challenge with collecting all the medals.
It also provides an opportunity to get into the social world of trading to obtain the rarer hard to find medals. Alternatively specific medals can be purchased on online marketplaces like Amazon, but this method may be more costly and less fun than trading.
Each Mystery Bag contains 3 random medals. Mystery bags may also be sold as multipacks or cases of 24 bags.
There are currently four series of Yo-kai medals released so far. Already series 1 medals are soon to be collector’s items as manufacturer Hasbro will be or already have discontinued production.
There are 44 medals to collect for Yo-kai Watch Series 1. Yo-kai Watch Series 2, 3, and 4 each have 50 collectable medals.
After a specific medal? You can also search on Amazon for those too:
Yo-kai Watch Medallium Collection Book
It would be useful to get the collection book along with the medals, so you’d have a place to put them all. Measuring 2.5 x 8.3 x 10.8 inches, the pages of the book can hold 12 medals each.
You can hold up to as much as 56 medals here but you can always buy extra pages if needed.
Collectors love this because it’s durable and holds all your precious medals properly. After all, if you’re planning to get more than 100 medals, you might as well store them properly so that they last you a long time.
Yo-kai Watch Medal Moments
If you want to display your medals differently and you’re not content with just a book, getting the Medal Moments is also a great idea.
Medal Moments are basically fun, collectible figures of the Yo-kai plus a corresponding medal.
Each Yo-kai holds a medal in a unique and different way, and the medals still work with the watch.
Measuring 2 x 5.5 x 6.3 inches and weighing only 0.8 ounces, each Yo-kai is a great collector’s item that you can really play with and display. Users love the detail of each collectible figure, because it brings the Yo-kai to life.
There are many collectible figures available: Whisper, Jibanyan, Komasan, Noko, Tattletell, among others.
Yo-kai Plush Toys
You can also opt to get plush versions of your favorite Yo-kai. Measuring 4 x 6 x 8 inches, this one’s perfect for kids because it’s soft and cuddly.
Whether it’s Whisper, Jibanyan, Komasan, Robonyan, or others, they’d definitely be a great addition to your plush collection.
Users love the fact that even if these are basically soft versions of their favorite Yo-kai, the detail is still there and you still really get to associate it with the characters they are based on.
Yo-kai Watch 3DS Game
